On November 6, 2012, The Middle Class Was Heard

The outcome of the November 6 elections is simply astounding.  NH’s working families turned out in record numbers to deliver the clear message that they will no longer tolerate the outrageous assault we have seen on our families. The tea party’s extreme agenda has failed. We have proven NH wants to restore our government to one of decency, compromise and common sense. And you, my union brothers and sisters, played a huge role in this victory.

It was through your efforts and resolve that we held on to the corner office in Concord and the oval office in Washington, D.C.  It was your diligence and fortitude that helped restore balance in the NH Senate and win a democratic majority in the NH House of Representatives, displacing many of the most divisive politicians who tore at our state the last two years.  I applaud you and I thank you for all that you have done.

Earlier this year, the SEA adopted its Granite Strong vision – a ten-point electoral vision on which candidates and political leaders should look and lead through.  We followed that vision when we endorsed candidates in races across the state. And, I am pleased to say that an unprecedented number of SEA members sought office themselves in order to correct the imbalance in Concord. Many of our member candidates won seats that will ensure the Granite Strong vision remains a lens from which to lead. Congratulations to all of these members for a job well done!

SEA had more volunteers in the field than any other election in our history. Hundreds of members invested their time to help to elect Governor Hassan and to re-elect President Obama. We knocked on thousands of doors, made thousands of phone calls to talk about the hard issues in this election, drove scores of voters to their polls – and our hard work paid off.

Let us savor these victories! However, let’s not believe for an instant that our work is over. Our work does not end with this election.  We must continue to move forward and have the right conversations with our elected leaders that will continue to guide us into a future that is bright for all our citizens – a future that is Granite Strong.

We look forward to beginning this journey with our newly elected Governor, Executive Council, NH Senate, NH House of Representatives – straight through to Capitol Hill and the White House.

In solidarity,

Diana Lacey, President
