Member Goes Bald for the Third Time

Most people experience it just once in a lifetime, but Vicki Riggio, chapter 60, is going completely bald for the third time in as many years!  She is shearing all of her locks to raise money to support cancer patients in the Monadnock region.  Vicki and her team will join dozens of others in this unique fundraiser – the 5th Annual Bald Is Beautiful event in Keene.

This cause is dear to Vicki. “I lost three people in three months to cancer last year,” she said.  “I’ve known several others who have battled cancer.  I have a co-worker who has had some treatment, and I’ve spent a lot of time with her.”

Vicky does not do this alone.  “I have a great team,” she said. “My husband participates along with my best friend since third grade.  Her twin sons are part of the team and this year we have another young man joining the team.”  The team is named the Cue Balls.  Vicky’s fundraising goal for her team is $3,000 with a personal goal of $1,000.

We asked Vicky if she dons a wig after the event and she told us “No, no wigs.  I’m just bald.  I do put on a bandana or a hat when my head gets cold, though.” Even though Vicky’s hair grows enough between events to need several cuts, it remains quite short.  Vicky does not see her annual hair shave as an act of bravery. “I am incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such supportive people,” she said.  Vicky told us her colleagues at DCYF in Keene are extremely encouraging.  “The first year, they all looked at me and couldn’t believe I did it,” she said.  “Now they say, ‘oh yeah! It’s time for Vicky to be bald again.’ ”

According to Vicky, the actual event, which takes place on April 27, is quite a happening.  Local beauticians’ hands fly with scissors; shavers hum and buzz as tresses fall to the floor; the local radio station is on hand providing publicity and music; and participants receive “swag bags” full of goodies from event sponsors and local businesses – we bet the contents don’t include hair products!

If you would like to help Vicki and the other Cue Balls out, you can do so in two ways.  First, by making a donation, visit their team fundraising page.  You can also help by eating at Chili’s in Keene on April 18 or 19. If you do so, give the server this coupon and 10% of your bill will be donated to the cause.

All proceeds go to the care and treatment of cancer patients at the Kingsbury Pavilion in Keene, NH. The funds are used for patient relief and cancer care.  Visit to learn more about the event.
