Calling all SEA stewards: There will be steward training on Monday, March 24. The all-day training will be held at the SEA office in Concord, and all SEA/SEIU Local 1984 stewards are welcome to attend. We’ll give you further details on the training in the coming weeks.
SEA Director Rich Gulla, who chairs the SEA’s Steward Committee, said Tom Manning will be a guest speaker. Manning held many positions with the state, including chief contract negotiator. He also worked for the SEA at one time.
Gulla said it’ll be valuable for stewards to hear the perspective of someone who sat on the other side of the negotiating table, as Manning did.
“From what I’ve been told, Tom was always a tough opponent, but he believed in the labor management system we have,” Gulla said. “He accepted that it was a power-sharing arrangement, and he didn’t make unilateral decisions affecting our contract.”
If you’re a steward and would like to attend the training, please RSVP by emailing Beth D’Ovidio at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Stewards Committee Meets
There will also be a Steward Committee meeting coming up next week, on Feb. 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the SEA office. At that meeting, guest speaker Randy Hunneyman will speak about conflict resolution in the workplace. Hunneyman is currently a field representative at the SEA; during his 21 years working for the state, he was a member leader who served as a chapter leader, steward, councilor and on the Board of Directors.
All stewards are welcome at the Steward Committee meeting.
