Member Wins Free Entry to CARS Race Series

Valerie King Has Run SEA 5K Every Year Since 1999

The SEA’s Road Race Committee has announced that Valerie King is the winner of a free entry into the CARS road race series. The committee set up the giveaway for any participants who signed up by Feb. 21.

King, an SEA member who works in the Medicaid office at Health and Human Services, said she was excited about winning.

“I had specifically tried to make the deadline so I could have the chance,” King said. “I’ve run CARS before, but it’s kind of expensive.”

The CARS series, which was created by a pair of SEA members, is made up of seven races, the second of which is the SEA 5K Road Race and Fitness Walk on April 5. The series starts with the Gilmanton 5K Road Race on March 29.

King, who’s worked at HHS for more than 20 years, said she’s run the SEA 5K every year since 1999. She said she and her running partner, Sherri Levesque, usually make the SEA 5K their first race of the year.

“It’s the one we look forward to, because it’s flat,” she said. “In your first race, you don’t want to kill yourself.”

King said the SEA 5K also brings out a lot of familiar faces.

“There are a lot of state employees there, so you see a lot of friends,” she said. “Even though DES beats us every year, it’s kind of fun to have the agency competition every year.”

As with a lot of road race series, CARS participants are rewarded with a jacket if they complete enough races.

“I have to do six out of seven to get the jacket,” King said. “I want to try to do all of them.”

King said she’ll segue from the CARS series, which wraps up in July, into an even bigger challenge.

“I told my sister I would run a half marathon with her in the fall, so this is kind of my motivation,” she said. “I have to stay in shape and hopefully build so I can do the half marathon.”

Have you taken the challenge to take part in the SEA 5K this year? Whether you run or walk, you’re invited to take part. You can find more details about the race, including how to sign up, at www.seiu1984.org/sea_5k/. We hope to see you out there!
