The SEA/SEIU Local 1984 welcomes new Organizer Maddisun Barrows, who started in the position on April 1. While Barrows is new to the job, she’s hardly new to the SEA — she came to the organization two years ago as a legal secretary.
Barrows said that in her two years in that position, she’s worked with members who’ve found themselves stuck in difficult situations at work. As an organizer, she’ll be in the more proactive position of helping them build power and improve their workplaces.
“Standing up for yourself and your coworkers can be very intimidating, and I know that can be off-putting,” she said. “But collective action, including bargaining, is so essential even to maintain current standards, let alone make improvements.”
Barrows replaces Steve Ekerberg, who left for a position with the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA. In her new position, Barrows will be working on internal and external organizing, meaning she’ll be working with current SEA chapters as well as potential new chapters. It’s a diverse, wide-ranging position, and Barrows says she’s excited for the challenge.
“I’m looking forward to listening, learning and educating, and seeing what we can do to make N.H. an even better place to live and work,” Barrows said.
Please join us in welcoming Maddisun to her new position.
