Driving through the town of Ashland, you might look up and spot a bit of SEA/SEIU Local 1984 pride. The members of Chapter 31, the Town of Ashland, sponsored one of the banners that hangs from light posts in town.
George Chase, the chapter president, explained how it all came about.
“We have banners that we put up that say ‘Welcome to Ashland’ and ones for Christmas,” Chase said. “One of our selectmen rallied local businesses to sponsor the banners, and they had the option of the banner saying it was sponsored by the business.”
The chapter recently split off from Chapter 49, a joint chapter with the city of Franklin. When he heard about the possibility of sponsoring a banner, a light bulb went off.
“I thought it would be a great idea to put the union on one,” he said. “It’s a nice way to show the union’s support for the town, and to highlight our new chapter.”
He brought the idea to his chapter, and members were on board. Being public works employees, the members even hung up the banner.
It’s a small gesture, but a nice (and very visible) show of support for the town and union by the fledgling chapter.
