Earlier this week, the work group created during the continuing resolution budget to look at the long-term utilization of the Sununu Youth Services Center released a draft report of its work. The commission was put together to address funding shortfalls created by legislatively-mandated cuts of $5.2 million in this biennium and beyond.
The working group’s report included several suggestions for alternative uses of the facility, including utilizing unused space to provide services for juveniles with substance abuse or mental health issues. The report also offers closing the facility as an option, however that is just a suggestion from the work group. In other words, any plans would have to got through public hearings and future legislation.
The next step to address the $5.2 million will come from the Department of Health and Human Services, which must submit its own report to the Fiscal Committee on how it could achieve the savings mandated by the legislature. We’ll update you once that report is released.
