Coverage for 3-D mammography continues to be an issue for some members covered by the State Employee Health Benefit, as we’ve heard continued reports that Anthem is denying claims.
The issue exists because Anthem considers the 3-D scans — as opposed to the older 2-D technology — to be experimental. The problem is that 2-D technology is becoming obsolete and many providers only have 3-D equipment.
The state has responded to this issue with a letter that aims to provide more context to the situation and what recourse members have: http://www.seiu1984.org/files/2016/06/letter-3D-Mammogram.pdf. The information is also valuable if you or a dependent are due to have a mammogram to ensure you won’t receive a bill. As with any procedure, it’s important to do your homework before you have the procedure done.
We wrote about this issue back in March, and you can find that post here: http://www.seiu1984.org/2016/03/03/anthem-and-3-d-mammography-coverage/. In the meantime, if you have more questions that the state’s letter does not answer, the state recommends reaching out to Anthem member services at 1-800-933-8415.
