The DHHS Designated Receiving Facility (DRF) in Laconia is 100% union. Every bargaining unit eligble employee at the facility belongs to SEA/SEIU. Are there any particular recruitment techniques the senior members are using to get such participation? Member Cindy Murphy said that many of the workers decide to join when they attend the DHHS orientation in Concord. “For those who don’t join at that point, we let them know what the union does for people. We encourge people to join and to maintain their membership.
Last week, Tammy Clark, SEA/SEIU Local 1984 Second Vice President and John Thyng, SEA/SEIU Local 1984 staff visited the worksite to present the members there with a certificate and a party. “They brought us union t-shirts and other things plus ice cream,” said Murphy. Some of our staff said this was the first time they had received any recognition of what we do and it was nice.”
“When I think of the union, I think of protection of our rights and benefits,” she said. “The union protects our interests. In the event there is any type of investigation we have the union to represent us.”
The DRF is a facility that provides services for individuals living with intellectual disabilities. The program there is holistic in its teaching approach.
If your worksite has 100% membership, don’t be surprised if you get a visit.
