Candidate Endorsement Process

SEA/SEIU Local 1984 endorses candidates in statewide races, as well as municipal races that would have an impact on one of our member units. Our endorsements include Democrats and Republicans — the main criteria is that the candidate supports policies that support working people.

The endorsement process works like this:

  1. The Political Education Committee (Poli Ed) screens candidates running for office using a combination of in-person interviews and the candidates’ voting records.
  2. Poli Ed Committee members vote on whether to recommend endorsing a candidate.
  3. The committee brings all recommendations for endorsements to the Board of Directors, which votes on whether to accept the recommendation.

All SEA/SEIU Local 1984 members are eligible to join the Poli Ed Committee, and meetings — held the second Monday of each month — are open to all, regardless of whether you’re a member of the committee. If you’re interested in joining the committee, contact John Hattan at jhattan@seiu1984.org.
